Lidskoe Pivo's Story of Success: 150 Years of Continuous Growth

Could Nosel Pupko ever imagine that his brewery would once become not only a legendary Belarusian brand, but also a flagship of cultural initiatives, awards and technical achievements? Today, Lidskoe Pivo is the country's oldest continuously operating brewery with 150 years of history, recorded in the Belarusian Book of Records. Let us recall its major milestones.

On March 29, 1874, Lida commoner Nosel Pupko received the permission to build a brewery on his long and narrow patch of land, hardly suited for farming. Two years later, the first batch of beer was brewed here. This first brew marks the beginning of Lidskoe Pivo's history. This bold decision of an adventurous Lida citizen to use his land in a rational way laid the foundation for the production that would survive through many eras and times of turmoil to finally emerge as the symbol of the city and the entire brewing tradition of Belarus.

The founder's natural wit and his ability to turn downsides into advantages often helped his family in times of trouble. In the beginning of the previous century, during the times of prohibition, "in order to avoid losses for the treasury and the brewery," the company offered a new drink with an ABV of up to 1.5%. Later, production of the legendary Lida kvass began in response to the needs of the army. By that time, the barrels were already decorated with the familiar deer. This symbol, sometimes mistakenly associated with the coat of arms of Grodno, became a real trademark of the dynasty.

The ability to quickly adapt and set new trends has always been a strength of the company. For example, back in 1940, the brewery started producing the legendary Zhigulevskoe, a variety offered by many beer companies of the country. It became a smash hit and still remains in the top 3 sellers in the company's portfolio.

Due to the exceptional quality of the brewery's products, in 1967 Lidskoe was among the first companies in the USSR to be granted the right to produce its own branded variety; four years later, it received the national Quality Mark. The popularity allowed Lidskoe Pivo and Lidski Kvass to obtain trademark protection by geographical origin, which helped eliminate any changes of fraudulent imitation.

In 2008, the brewery was modernized in cooperation with the Finnish Group Olvi, following an investment of over 80 million euros. Eight new Finnish beer tanks, each one as tall as a five-storey building, were transported from Finland by special vehicles escorted by road police. Modernization was completed in time for the 140th anniversary of the company. This signified the return of the legendary deer to the label, and the brand began speaking Belarusian: Lidskoe turned into Lidskae.

Four years ago, Lida Brewery Museum was opened in the historical building of the brewery. During the past year alone, it was visited by over 40 thousand guests from Belarus and other countries. Recently, the company also opened the Beer Museum in Minsk. Social and cultural responsibility of the brand is hard to overestimate: the company regularly supports healthcare, educational and sports organizations.

Everything starts with water

Continued success of the enterprise is ensured by modern technologies and strict quality control. The last five years signified great changes for the factory. Investments into modernization have exceeded 17 million euros, and the technological development strategy has already yielded results: in 2024, the company won the prize as the Industry Leader in the field of efficient production.

The first step was the water. Six years ago, the brewery abandoned chlorination for UV treatment. This move made it possible to bring the quality of water up to international standards. The construction of in-house treatment facilities began last year: soon, water will be returning into open bodies, and the energy generated will cover the needs of the facility. Completion of the project is planned for the end of 2026.

The next step was the introduction of new production facilities. Automatic canning line launched in the end of 2020 made it possible to avoid using third party facilities and ensure in-house quality control. Expansion of the vessel equipment fleet removed bottlenecks in the production cycle, while the automated mixer installed in February 2026 helped increase the flexibility of planning.

Digitalization of the factory began with the introduction of the Finnish energy monitoring system EnergyTrack. This made it possible to boost the performance by a third, eliminating the effect of the human factor on the purity of kvass. Modernization of CO₂ reduced gas consumption and the associated costs by a quarter over five years, and the use of disposable packages helped decrease the carbon footprint.

Quality control reached the next level. This year, Astran labeling system was introduced at the factory, which ensures traceability of each product unit from the production shop to the store. Limited IPA series have been in production since 2022, expanding the premium segment with dry-hopped varieties. Modernization of the kvass cooling system in 2024 eliminated a bottleneck in the process flow chain, providing a critical solution for seasonal peak loads. In five years, non-alcoholic beverage production capacity increased by 27 percent.

Process quality has been proven internationally. Annual SGS audits and strict inspections conducted by PepsiCo (results: above 97%) confirm compliance with international quality standards. In 2021, the company received the Silver PepsiCo 3PM Service Performance Excellence Award; since 2020, six unannounced AIB audits have been passed successfully, proving the highest level of the safety culture.

Logistics of the brewery deserves a special mention: warehouse management system, route control technology and the Electronic Queue ensure the highest level of services.

Today, Lidskoe Pivo is a strong technology leader whose success is evidenced by impressive metrics (350 million liters per year, 200 items in the portfolio, export to 20 countries of the world), as well as unanimous respect from the citizens. It has been recognized as Brand No. 1 in the Beer, Kvass and Brewery categories, as well as the winner of the People's Choice prize in the special nomination of the People's Mark Awards.

All these achievements, however, would mean nothing without the most important thing: the ability to cherish tradition.

"Nosel Pupko hardly imagined that his work would stand the test of time, or that such technologies would be employed at the brewery one day," the company reflects. "More likely, he simply believed in quality. And this belief turns out to be stronger than any circumstances."
