Construction of Treatment Facilities: Lidskae Piva’s Contribution to City’s Environment

Construction of in-house wastewater treatment facilities is not only a contribution of large enterprises into the city’s environment, but also a way to reduce the load on municipal wastewater treatment system. For Lidskae Piva, this has become a large-scale project involving many of company’s employees.

We asked Pavel Rozum, Chief Engineer of the company, to tell us more about the project.
“Let me start with some numbers. Lidskae Piva, one of city’s largest enterprises, discharges about 2,000 cubic meters of water every day. Just for scale: an average apartment consumes around 10 to 12 cubic meters per month. Of course, this burden on the municipal treatment system is very heavy. That’s why enterprises are supposed to have their own treatment facilities. It helps provide some relief for the city’s system.”

The future treatment facilities are distinguished by the fact that the treatment process will involve the use of bacteria. As a result, biogas will be generated, which will be trapped and used as a source of energy. The station has its own in-house boiler room: it will be fueled by the biogas generated during treatment and provide heating, as well as support the operation of all treatment facilities.

The plans for construction of treatment facilities at Lidskae Piva had been in circulation since 2020, but the actual works began only recently.

“This project turned out to be extremely difficult, and I will explain why. Lidskae Piva’s brewery is located in the city center, and the company’s buildings are classified as objects of historical and cultural heritage. The engineers had a nearly impossible task before them. The project had to undergo numerous inspections before taking its current form. Now we can confidently say that the new building will be the tallest one on Lidskae Piva’s grounds.”

According to the plan, the construction of treatment facilities is expected to be completed by December 1, 2026. On February 1, the equipment will be launched in the trial mode, while its full-scale operation will commence on April 1, 2027.

“It may seem that we’re building a four-story building for a single person,” jokes Pavel Rozum. “Indeed, only one shift worker is required for maintenance of the wastewater treatment facilities. However, the project provides for an entire floor of office premises. Some of the employees from our laboratories will move here: they will control the state of water and be responsible for the general field of ecology at the enterprise.”

Were there any unexpected obstacles you had to face during construction?

"Unexpected things happen, of course; this is a major project, a major construction site. But it's more pleasant to talk about unexpected finds. During construction, dozens of antique glass bottles bearing the markings of the Nosel Pupko brewery were discovered. All the artifacts have been donated to the Lida Brewery Museum."
